GUY'S AND ST THOMAS' 3N & GENETIC CANCER RESEARCH

unique challenge

unique problem

We've raised over £94,000 so far! Now for the science part: we visited the cancer research labs and they shared how our fundraising makes a difference.

What is 3N (Triple Negative) Breast Cancer? Here's how the lead boffin explains it:

'My team and I are focusing our work on triple negative forms of breast cancer and cancers associated with functional gene deficiencies in BRCA1 and BRCA2. This is an uncommon diagnosis of breast cancer whereby the cancers lack oestrogen, progesterone and Her2 protein receptors.
Unable to receive hormone treatment and targeted cancer drugs, chemotherapy drugs are often the only option for patients (even though these cancers are more chemotherapy resistant). By using cutting edge techniques and investigating tumours held in our tissue bank that were donated by patients, we are identifying new ways to target genes with drugs.'

THE GUYS AT GUY'S AND ST THOMAS'
Every penny raised by the 3N Challenge goes directly to the 3N & genetic cancer research team at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital, London. This means the researchers do not need to apply for funding from charities, enabling them to utilise new technologies, fund PhD students testing new ideas or simply re-supply their labs more quickly.

'Investment in innovative medical technology has been key to responsibly growing our research, which can now pave the way for better care and treatment for cancer patients in the UK and worldwide. We collaborate with teams across the UK, as well as USA, Canada and further afield to make sure all our research is having the widest impact possible. We are grateful to all our supporters, without whom the work we do wouldn’t be possible.'

Guy's Professor Andrew Tutt explains the impact of the £90,000 raised by our 2016 Challenge:

'With your donation, we were able to fund an InCucyte Live Cell Analysis system. We are thrilled with the way it allows our research team to monitor cells over time and analyse real-time changes in a high-throughput and information-rich way. The new equipment yields kinetic data and insight that is far superior to our previous capabilities; thanks to you, we can now conceive and execute experiments that were not previously thought possible ...

... The Challenge funds have made an invaluable contribution to our programme of work, and have significantly enhanced our research capabilities with the long-term goal of improving patient health. The equipment has provided us with greater evidence to monitor other complex processes and will assist us in providing robust evidence for our work when presented to peer review journals. Thank you.'
