3NC 2018

ONTARIO

Welcome to our first Canadian adventure!

Welcome to a world where a campsite is any gap in the trees big enough to fit a tent and route information is only as up to date as the last folk who travelled that way.

Where local knowledge means more than any map and where everything can change on the whim of the next fallen tree.

As we arrived, fire-fighters from across North America were still deployed in the north and all air traffic bar planes carrying water bombs was grounded. We'd been given a new route, meaning 8 months of planning quite literally went up in smoke.

"Any cause that involves fighting cancer is something which means a lot to me. This ruthless illness has affected many people I know, but the closest person was my grandad . He fought and won, but not everyone is as lucky. I would dedicate this challenge specifically to him. The physical challenges of the event would be a great way to push myself – and achieve something great, for a great cause."

"A few years ago a family close to my heart were devastated by 3N (triple Negative) Breast Cancer. They are still coming to terms with the death of a wife and mother, and the life changing surgery, chemotherapy and long term health consequences of this genetic problem for two of that mother's daughters. Your donation will support research to eradicate this terrible disease, please give what you can to support Guy's and St Thomas'."

"In 2003 my father passed away from prostate cancer. A long battle which thankfully came to an end.
Towards the end I started to lose my voice which lead to investigations revealing a genetic condition that required extensive treatment.

A new journey began, time spent at a variety of hospitals but cared for mainly at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

I underwent 3 operations to remove multiple tumours in my abdomen and at the base of my skull.

I suffered significant nerve damage as a result of the surgery which led to paralysis of various parts of my body including my left vocal chord which left me unable to speak.
I undertook two courses of radiotherapy which managed to check the growth of the remaining tumours.
Time passed and I underwent further surgery to improve my voice which explains the rough voice that I have now!

In 2017 I had a mini stroke, treatment for skin cancer and discovered abnormalities in my heart.

Despite the above my consultant tells me I’m a healthy young man and should push on with life as normal!
I’ve had some very close shaves and know how lucky I am to still be here.
I have met many others along the way who have their own difficult journeys.
I see the 3N Challenge as a great opportunity to test myself and see what I’m capable of, hopefully providing some motivation to others who have struggled and most importantly support Steve and the team in raising money to support treatment and research into triple negative breast cancer.
Onwards and upwards!"
